For years, updating firmware on Linux felt like asking a club bouncer to let you in while wearing the wrong shoes. You had the hardware. You had the OS. But the firmware, the low-level software that lives in a chip on your motherboard and controls how the rest of the machine boots, that lived behind a Windows-only wall, or worse, on some random forum thread you hoped was not malware. I have been there. Most of us have. You buy a machine, install your distro (a Linux distribution, meaning a packaged build of the Linux kernel plus desktop environment and applications, like Fedora, Ubuntu, or Arch), and then realize the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System, the firmware chip that initializes your hardware before the OS loads) is three versions behind with no official path forward.
That frustration is exactly why the Linux Vendor Firmware Service, or LVFS, exists. It is a secure portal where hardware makers upload firmware updates as Linux-ready .cab files. Users grab them through GNOME Software or fwupdmgr (the command-line tool that talks to LVFS and applies firmware updates on Linux) without hunting shady download links. Think of it like an app store, but for your motherboard’s brain.
The money problem was quietly suffocating LVFS
Running a service like this costs real money. Hosting, bandwidth, security audits, and developer time do not pay for themselves. For a long time, the biggest contributors were Framework and the Open Source Framework Foundation, each donating around $10K a year. That is noble, but it is not sustainable when the service supports millions of devices across dozens of vendors. The money problem was quietly suffocating LVFS, and if you are a Linux user, that should annoy you. We already deal with enough friction. The last thing we need is the one reliable firmware pipeline running on goodwill and ramen.
Lenovo and Dell finally stepped up
Then Lenovo and Dell did something that actually mattered. They joined as Premier sponsors, the highest tier, dropping $100K a year each. That is ten times what Framework could manage, and it instantly changed the math. For two companies that sell Linux preinstalled on some of their most popular lines, this is not charity. It is a direct investment in the experience their customers actually have. Lenovo’s ThinkPads have been the unofficial laptop of Linux users for decades. Dell’s XPS and Precision lines with Ubuntu are not niche experiments anymore. These companies profit from Linux users, so funding the infrastructure those users depend on is just good business. It took too long, but credit where it is due. They showed up.
HP just joined the club
Now HP has followed suit, also committing $100K a year as a Premier sponsor. This puts them right alongside Dell and Lenovo, and it means three of the biggest PC manufacturers on the planet are actively funding Linux firmware infrastructure. HP even got a quote on the LVFS homepage from Xavi Garcia, their Senior Vice President, saying LVFS enables quick, easy, and timely BIOS updates for Linux-based systems. As an HP user running Fedora myself, this matters. It means my firmware updates will come through the same trusted pipeline as my system updates. No rebooting to Windows, no hunting .exe files from support pages that may or may not work, no trusting random GitHub forks that claim to extract HP firmware. Just open GNOME Software, click update, and move on with your day.
The vendors still sitting on the sidelines
So here is the obvious question. Where is everyone else? Acer, Asus, MSI, Razer, Samsung, and a laundry list of smaller OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers, the companies that assemble and sell the laptops under their own brand) are still silent. The image of Linux users as some tiny niche community that can fend for itself is not just outdated. It is laughable. We are talking about millions of users, including the developers who build the software that powers half the internet. These companies sell hardware to Linux users whether they acknowledge it or not. Every laptop that ships with Windows gets wiped and replaced with a distro minutes after unboxing. Every workstation that ends up in a server rack runs some flavor of Linux. Ignoring LVFS does not mean those users disappear. It just means they have a worse, less secure experience with your product.
LVFS has started to apply pressure. API access for non-sponsoring vendors faces cuts starting August 2026, and automated upload limits will tighten in December 2026. The free ride is ending, and the vendors who kept treating Linux as someone else’s problem are about to feel it.
What this actually means for your next laptop
This is not about corporate goodwill or feel-good open source stories. This is about whether your next laptop will get security patches for its BIOS without you becoming a part-time firmware hacker. With Lenovo, Dell, and HP all in, you now have three major brands where Linux firmware updates work the way they should. Out of the box. Through your normal software updater. No weird rituals required.
When you shop for your next machine, this matters more than most spec sheet bullet points. A slightly faster CPU means nothing if you cannot patch the firmware running it. A better screen is nice, but a vulnerable BIOS is a permanent risk. Put your money toward vendors who treat Linux support as real infrastructure, not an afterthought.
What to check before buying
If you are shopping for a new laptop and you run Linux, here is the short list I now run through before I buy:
- LVFS sponsor check. A vendor funding LVFS is signaling they take your OS seriously. The current list is on the LVFS homepage, and it is short.
- Distro support pages. Dell, Lenovo, and HP all have official “Linux on [model name]” pages. If the page exists and is current, the vendor has engineers keeping the firmware working.
- fwupdmgr get-devices output. Run this on the live demo machine in a store if you can, or check the model number on the LVFS device list before you commit.
- Community reports. Arch Wiki and Reddit’s r/linuxhardware are brutally honest about which models work and which are nightmares.
- The Ubuntu certification list. Canonical certifies specific laptops for Ubuntu. If your model is on the list, you have a known-good baseline.
- Repair and parts availability. A vendor who supports LVFS is usually a vendor who designs for serviceability, because the same engineering discipline applies.
Trade-offs
LVFS funding is not free in vendor terms. A $100K Premier sponsorship is a real budget line, and it comes with strings: vendor influence on roadmap priorities, expectations of priority support, and a public commitment that smaller sponsors cannot match. The good news is that the influence cuts both ways. Premier sponsors have pull to ask for features the community wants too, like better support for AMD platforms or earlier firmware staging for unreleased hardware.
In our case, the math is straightforward. The $300K a year from Lenovo, Dell, and HP turns LVFS from a project that survived on $20K in goodwill into one that can plan three years out. The downside is concentration risk. If one of the three pulls out, the funding math gets uncomfortable again. Smaller vendors are unlikely to fill the gap.
If you are buying a new laptop, this is a clear win. Pick from the three sponsors and you get firmware updates that just work. If you already own a machine from a non-sponsor, the situation is more nuanced. Your existing laptop will keep working, and the cuts to non-sponsor API access mostly affect the vendors themselves, not end users. The real risk is that non-sponsors will start shipping hardware that gets fewer and less reliable firmware updates, which is a 2027-2028 problem, not a 2026 one.
What I would tell past me
If I could send a message back to the version of me that spent a Saturday hunting for a Dell BIOS update on a forum that may or may not have been legitimate, I would say three things:
- LVFS exists, and the sponsor list is short. Memorize it. The vendors on the list are the ones who respect your time.
- fwupdmgr is your friend. Run it on a new machine the same day you set it up. You will be surprised how out-of-date the firmware is.
- A $100K sponsorship is a real number, not marketing. Treat it as a signal. Vendors who pay into the infrastructure they rely on are vendors worth buying from.
The pipeline is finally, quietly, sustainably funded. That is bigger news than most of the keynote announcements you will read this year.
