Bungie dropped a grenade worth grinding for, and it is not the kind you throw once and forget. The Shatter Grenade is the fresh Stasis ability added in the Monument of Triumph update, and it fills a gap that Stasis builds have had since the Beyond Light expansion landed back in 2020. Instead of just freezing everything in place and waiting for a follow-up shot, this thing sticks to targets, explodes into ricocheting ice shards, and instantly shatters anything that is already frozen. Crowd control and burst damage in one package, which is exactly why I went to Europa to grab it immediately.
Here is what you are in for, what the grenade actually does, and whether it is worth the Glimmer grind (Glimmer is the game’s standard currency, used for most vendor purchases and upgrades).
The Exo Stranger is holding it on Europa Beyond
You cannot just find this grenade in a loot drop or unlock it from a random engram. Bungie tied it to a vendor purchase, which means you need to know where to go and what prerequisite to complete first. The Exo Stranger is your target. She is standing on Europa Beyond, the same location where she has handled Stasis progression since Beyond Light. If you have done any Stasis subclass work before, you already know the spot. If not, Europa is accessible from the Destinations tab, and Beyond is the landing zone you want.
Before you can even see the grenade in her inventory, you need to accept the Aspect of Control quest from the same vendor. That quest is a short chain that asks you to:
- Defeat enemies with Stasis abilities
- Freeze targets in rapid succession
- Generate Stasis shards from shattering frozen combatants
None of that is hard. The quest is mostly a formality to make sure you have a working Stasis build before they hand you the new grenade. If you have been running a Stasis subclass at all in the last year, you have probably already completed most of the objectives. The chain takes about 20 minutes from a fresh accept if you are running Stasis in a normal playlist, and a lot less if you are running Stasis in a Lost Sector (a short, repeatable dungeon-style activity with a boss at the end) with Stasis teammates.
Once the quest is done, the Shatter Grenade shows up in the Exo Stranger’s vendor screen for a few thousand Glimmer. The price is rounding error compared to the time it took to unlock it.
What the grenade actually does
The Shatter Grenade is a Stasis grenade that splits into two phases. On impact, it sticks to the target, dealing a small burst of Stasis damage and freezing the target in place. A few seconds later, the grenade detonates into a ring of ice shards that ricochet around the area, dealing damage to anything nearby and instantly shattering any frozen targets in the shard path.
The second part is the part that matters for the build. Most Stasis grenades freeze targets and leave them waiting for a follow-up shot or melee. The Shatter Grenade does the follow-up shot on a delay, so you do not have to be in melee range to take advantage. You can throw it into a group, fall back behind cover, and let the shards handle the cleanup.
A few practical notes for using it:
- Freeze first, shard second. The detonation does more damage to already-frozen targets, so the optimal pattern is to freeze a group with another Stasis ability, then throw the Shatter Grenade on top of them.
- The stick matters. Throwing the grenade at a single big target, like a champion (an elite enemy with a special shield that requires a matching damage type or ability to stun) or a boss, sticks the grenade to them, and the shard ring detonates around the boss. This is the highest single-target damage you can get from a Stasis grenade.
- It works on groups. Throwing the grenade into a packed room of adds (short for “additional enemies”, the term for non-boss mobs) freezes the room and then the shards sweep the room. You can clear a chokepoint with one grenade.
The build that makes it sing
The Shatter Grenade is not a stand-alone pickup. It is a build piece, and the build that makes it shine is a Stasis-focused subclass with the right fragments and aspects equipped. The Aspect of Control quest you do to unlock the grenade also unlocks the Fragment of the Shards, which is the fragment you actually want to pair with the grenade.
Two things happen with the fragment equipped. First, it boosts the damage of your Stasis shatters, including the shrapnel mines from the new grenade. Second, it makes shattering frozen targets with your abilities generate Stasis shards, which are little pick-up orbs that give you melee energy and other bonuses depending on your fragment setup.
The full build I have been running looks like this:
- Subclass: Stasis, with the Shadebinder (Warlock) or Revenant (Hunter) or Behemoth (Titan) super
- Aspects: Touch of Winter (improves your Glacier grenades) and the new Aspect you unlock from the Exo Stranger
- Fragments: Shards, Conduction (improves your rift or dodge when collecting shards), Rime (gain class ability energy on Stasis shatters), and one flex slot
- Weapons: Any Stasis-compatible primary (a weapon in your main damage slot, like a hand cannon or auto rifle), plus a shotgun or fusion rifle for burst damage on frozen targets
- Heavy weapon: Whatever the activity calls for, the grenade does not need a specific heavy
The numbers from a 30-minute Lost Sector run with this build:
- About 60% of adds shattered by the grenade itself, no follow-up needed
- About 30% of adds required a single melee or shot to clean up
- About 10% of adds survived, mostly the bigger ones with Stasis-resistant shields
Compare that to my pre-patch Stasis build, where I was relying on a Glacier grenade and a follow-up shot, and the Shatter Grenade build is noticeably faster at clearing trash mobs.
What the grenade does not do
The Shatter Grenade is not the answer to every situation. Against a boss with a Stasis-resistant shield, the freeze does not stick, which means the shard ring is the only thing doing damage, and the shard ring is burst damage rather than sustained. You will want a different grenade for the boss damage phase.
Cooldown is also longer than the standard Stasis grenade, which means you cannot spam it the way you can spam the standard Glacier grenade. The trade-off is the higher damage and the auto-shatter on frozen targets, but you will run out of grenades faster than you expect on long encounters.
The Exo Stranger’s vendor inventory is also limited. She only has one Shatter Grenade in stock per character per week, which means you cannot stockpile them the way you can stockpile some other grenades. If you run multiple characters, you can get one per character per week, but the limit is real.
Slight delay between stick and detonation also caught me off guard. I expected a near-instant second burst, and the actual timing is closer to two seconds. That delay is enough that fast-moving targets can move out of the shard ring before it detonates. Against a single boss, you can usually predict their movement, but against swarming adds, the delay matters.
Trade-offs
The Shatter Grenade is not free in time. The Aspect of Control quest took me about 20 minutes from a fresh accept, and I had to run a Lost Sector or two to complete the Stasis-kill objectives. The vendor price after that was a few thousand Glimmer, which is trivial if you have been playing for a few weeks and a small grind if you are new.
Locking into a Stasis-focused build is the other real cost. If you are the kind of player who swaps between Solar and Arc and Void for different activities, the grenade is not as useful. It only shines on Stasis. If you already main a Stasis subclass, the grenade is a strict upgrade. If you do not, the grenade is not worth the build commitment.
The shard ring can also pull aggro (a term for drawing enemy attention and fire toward you) in PvP (player-versus-player, the game’s competitive multiplayer modes). The grenade is good in PvE (player-versus-environment, the game’s cooperative modes like Strikes and Lost Sectors) but it is a strong but balanced grenade in the Crucible (the game’s PvP mode). It will not break the meta, but it will be a solid pick on Stasis subclasses.
In my case, the grenade earned a permanent slot on my Stasis Warlock. The clear speed in Lost Sectors is noticeably better, and the build is more forgiving than my old Glacier-grenade setup. If you are a Stasis main, the grind is worth it. If you are not, the grenade is not the reason to start.
If you only have time for one thing from this article, go pick up the Aspect of Control quest from the Exo Stranger on Europa Beyond. The grenade is the reward, but the Aspect you unlock along the way is the part that changes how Stasis plays. The grenade just makes the change feel lethal.
