For two years I blamed my ISP for a problem that was actually geometry and channel congestion. A friend pointed out that Samsung phones quietly include a Wi-Fi analyzer inside One UI, and within an hour I had a chart that explained exactly why the back room of my house had been losing the fight with the router. The tool ships on the phone. Almost nobody knows it is there. That is exactly the kind of finding worth writing down, because the fix is usually boring and the data is already in your pocket.
Most home networks have one weak spot that nobody diagnoses because the symptoms look like an internet provider problem. Calls glitch at the same hour every evening. Streaming buffers in one room and not the others. Speed tests come back fine because the test ran near the router. The actual fix usually turns out to be router placement, channel choice, or splitting the SSIDs. None of that happens until somebody sees the chart.
Why a single speed test is not a diagnosis
The most common mistake with home Wi-Fi is treating a speed test as the verdict on the network. A speed test is a snapshot at one location, at one moment, on one band. It does not show neighbor congestion, channel crowding, or which band the phone is clinging to in the back bedroom. The snapshot almost always lies about the worst spot in the house, which is the spot you actually care about.
Third-party analyzer apps exist and they work. The annoying part is that Samsung’s own version of the same tool sits inside a menu so buried that people who review phones for a living miss it. The cost of finding it is a minute of tapping through settings. The cost of skipping it is usually a few hundred dollars on a mesh system that does not actually solve the underlying issue.
What a single speed test cannot tell you, in the order that matters:
- Which Wi-Fi channels your neighbors are already using, and where the air is congested.
- Which rooms in the house are quietly stuck on the slower 2.4 GHz band.
- Whether the router is bouncing between bands like a confused pinball.
- Where the actual dead zones live, instead of the rooms you happened to test from.
That is the gap this built-in tool fills, and it is the gap that most people end up buying hardware to fix.
The path through Settings
The feature lives under a name nobody searches for: Connectivity Labs. It takes about a minute to find. Open Settings, then Connections, then Wi-Fi, then tap the three-dot menu in the top corner. Inside that menu is the Intelligent Wi-Fi screen, and inside that screen is the toggle that turns on the full analytics toolkit.
The path in short form:

- Tap the three-dot menu in the top corner
- Open Intelligent Wi-Fi settings
- Enable Connectivity Labs
That is the whole journey. No account, no separate app, no permission prompt. Samsung has not advertised the feature, which is the main reason most people never find it.
What the menu actually exposes
Once enabled, the phone starts showing data that the stock Wi-Fi screen normally hides. Channel utilization tells you which channels are crowded in your neighborhood, which is the part that explains why a “decent” 2.4 GHz signal still drops frames at peak hours. A signal-strength readout tracks as you walk around the house, which turns dead zones from theoretical to visible. The band display tells you, at any moment, whether the phone is on 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, and that single piece of information is usually the difference between blaming the router and actually fixing the problem.
Four pieces of data that do most of the diagnostic work:
- Channel utilization charts showing what the neighborhood looks like.
- Signal tracking as you walk around, turning dead zones into a chart.
- Band display that surfaces the truth about which radio the phone is on.
- Connection history that highlights patterns, like drops clustered around a specific time.
There is no marketing pitch in the menu. It is data, presented plainly. That is exactly what a diagnostic tool should be.
The diagnosis it surfaced in my house
Walking around with the analyzer open told a story my speed tests had been hiding for two years. The back room was on a weak 2.4 GHz signal because the router sits at the opposite end of the house. Worse, that band was packed with neighbor networks, so even when the signal looked acceptable, the air was congested. The fix was dull. Lift the router off the floor and toward the middle of the house. Split the SSIDs so the phone could prefer 5 GHz where the signal made it. None of that would have happened without the chart.
A short list of what the chart told me to do, in the order that mattered most:
- Walk slowly through the house and watch the band flip happen.
- Find any room that consistently lands on 2.4 GHz. That is the weak spot.
- Look at the channel view. If every neighbor is on channel 1, pick 6 or 11.
- Try moving the router a couple of feet higher or more toward the center of the house.
Most of the time the diagnosis lands on placement and channel choice rather than gear. That is the part nobody likes to hear because it feels too simple to be the real answer.
Trade-offs
A free built-in tool sounds like an easy win, and it usually is, but a few real limitations are worth naming up front.
- Connectivity Labs is buried and undocumented. Anyone who is not comfortable digging through settings will probably not find it on their own, which limits how broadly this advice applies to non-technical households.
- The tool is not a substitute for a dedicated analyzer. It is a quick reality check, not a full survey, and the data depth is shallower than apps like Wi-Fi Analyzer or NetSpot.
- Samsung-specific. Anyone on a Pixel, an iPhone, or a budget Android phone does not get this menu at all, and the advice does not apply outside One UI.
- Privacy upside is real but the chart still scans constantly. Walking around with the screen open means the phone is actively probing nearby networks, which is fine but worth knowing.
Before spending a couple hundred dollars on a mesh system, slow down for ten minutes and check this menu first. A lot of “bad Wi-Fi” is actually bad placement or bad channel choice, and the chart is the cheapest way to find out which.
Why the chart matters more than the hardware
The instinct when Wi-Fi gets flaky is to assume the gear is undersized and reach for a new router or a mesh kit. Sometimes the gear really is the problem. More often, the gear was fine and the network was never tuned to the space it lives in. The chart is what tells you which case you are in, and the answer is rarely what the marketing copy at the router aisle suggests.
There is a deeper point here that goes beyond Wi-Fi. Most home tech problems have a cheap diagnostic step before they have a hardware fix. The diagnostic step is usually ignored because it takes a minute of attention and does not produce a receipt. The hardware fix gets purchased because it produces a receipt. That is how a $300 mesh system ends up in a house that needed the router moved two feet, and that is how a problem that could have been diagnosed in ten minutes turns into a weekend of opening boxes.

What to do once the chart is open
The single most useful thing to do with the menu enabled is a slow loop through the house. Phone in hand, screen on, walking from the room where the Wi-Fi works to the room where it does not. Watch the band flip happen. Watch the signal bars move. Watch the channel view change as you cross walls and floors. Five minutes of that walk tells you more about the network than an hour of speed tests.
If the back of the house stays on 2.4 GHz the whole time, that is the weak spot. Move the router, or split the SSID so the phone prefers 5 GHz only where it makes sense. If every neighbor is on channel 1 and so is the home network, change to 6 or 11 and see if the throughput moves. None of this requires a new box. None of it requires calling the ISP. It requires the chart, a few minutes of walking, and the willingness to believe that the boring answer is the real one.
