For Honor shows why Steam Deck compatibility is rented

A green “Play” button on a Steam Deck is not a long-term promise. It tells a player that the software runs under the current arrangement. It does not tell anyone that a publisher will keep supporting Linux after an anti-cheat policy, ranked mode, or business priority changes.

Ubisoft’s decision to remove For Honor from Linux is a clean example of that distinction. The source says Linux desktops and Steam Deck will lose access beginning September 10, the same day Ranked Dominion and Ranked Duel are scheduled to launch. The useful response is not another argument about whether Linux gaming is alive. It is a plan for what you own, what can change, and which fallback is worth maintaining.

A compatibility layer is not a support contract

Wine (software that translates many Windows calls for Linux) and Proton (Valve’s compatibility layer built on Wine) make a large Windows catalog available on Linux. They are remarkable pieces of engineering, but neither one can force a publisher to maintain a game’s online services or anti-cheat configuration.

That distinction matters more for a competitive game than for an offline title. A single-player game may keep working as long as its executable and dependencies remain usable. A ranked game depends on servers, account checks, and protection software that can change without touching the hardware in your hands.

The source describes the Linux gaming stack as a set of layers: the translation layer, Valve’s Steam Deck experience, and community projects that fill gaps. I would add one question to that stack before buying anything: which layer has the authority to revoke access?

  • Game files. Check whether the title works offline or needs a live service.
  • Launcher rules. Identify the account and launcher that can change the requirements.
  • Protection software. Find out whether anti-cheat runs through Proton and whether the publisher controls its configuration.
  • Fallback platform. Decide what you will use if a future update removes Linux support.

This checklist does not predict a publisher’s next decision. It keeps a working game from being mistaken for a durable purchase.

What Ubisoft is changing on September 10

For Honor will no longer be playable on Linux desktops or Steam Deck starting September 10, according to Ubisoft. Ranked Dominion and Ranked Duel are scheduled to go live that day, so the timing makes the decision especially visible to players who were waiting for competitive modes.

Ubisoft says it needs additional measures to protect ranked play and maintain a fair competitive environment. The company also says it cannot meaningfully deploy protection on Linux. Whatever a player thinks of that explanation, the immediate fact is easier to work with: the game’s current Linux path has an end date.

For Honor had already been playable on Steam Deck through Easy Anti-Cheat support, according to the source, which says Ubisoft enabled that support in July 2023. Easy Anti-Cheat had supported the platform for years. That history does not prove that the present protection plan is technically simple. It does show that the new restriction is a change in policy or implementation, not a discovery that the Deck exists.

Three separate decisions follow from the timing:

  • Before September 10. Decide whether the game is important enough to test a fallback.
  • On September 10. Expect the Linux and Steam Deck path to stop working according to Ubisoft’s announcement.
  • After the change. Treat any remaining workaround as temporary unless Ubisoft restores support.

I would not build a purchase decision around an unofficial hope that the old configuration survives. A compatibility path that depends on a publisher’s continued permission can disappear with the next protection update.

Anti-cheat has a real technical case

Anti-cheat software is designed to detect tools or behavior that give a player an unfair advantage. Proton and Wine create a different execution environment from native Windows, which can make detection and enforcement harder. A publisher running a ranked service has a legitimate reason to care about that difference.

Technical concerns still have boundaries. “Harder to verify” does not automatically mean “every Linux player is a threat,” and removing a platform does not explain whether cheating elsewhere has been solved. The source’s criticism is aimed at the size of the response: a whole platform loses access even though the same game previously worked through a supported path.

I find that more useful than declaring one side dishonest. A competitive game needs protection that its operator trusts. Linux players need a support promise that lasts longer than a temporary configuration. Ubisoft chose to protect the first priority by dropping the second.

That choice also changes the value of community fixes. A community project can improve translation, launcher behavior, or controller support. It cannot sign a publisher’s anti-cheat policy or guarantee access to a server. Keep those powers separate when evaluating a workaround.

This is a pattern, not a Linux-only surprise

The source points to Roblox blocking Wine users in 2023, GTA V Online barring Linux players in 2024, and Apex Legends removing Steam Deck access in 2024. The individual reasons differ, so these cases should not be treated as having the same technical cause.

A repeated shape is still visible. Linux compatibility often arrives through a translation layer, a publisher setting, and a community effort. That combination can produce a good experience for years. It can also be unwound by one party that never promised permanence.

$12 million in funding for the Omacom Foundation, which supports Omarchy and related open source projects, points in a different direction. Linux gaming and Linux desktop work are attracting money and organized support. The source also mentions Xodus, a project exploring Xbox and Game Pass titles on Linux, while noting that playable builds do not yet exist. Those are signs of active development, not evidence that every Windows game is secure on the platform.

I would describe the situation plainly: Linux gaming is getting better, while individual publisher commitments remain conditional. Both statements can be true at once.

Build a fallback before the game needs one

If For Honor matters to you, treat September 10 as a maintenance deadline. The practical fallback described by the source is Windows, whether that means a Windows desktop, a dual-boot setup, or another machine available for games that reject Linux.

That fallback does not need to replace the Steam Deck. It only needs to exist before the game stops working. A small amount of preparation can answer questions that are expensive to discover during a ranked launch.

  • Check the hardware. Confirm that the Windows option can run the game and handle its input devices.
  • Test the account. Sign in before the deadline so a password or launcher problem does not look like an anti-cheat failure.
  • Reserve the storage. A dual-boot plan needs room for the operating system, updates, and the game itself.
  • Document the choice. Write down which games require Windows and why, so the fallback remains maintainable.

A dual-boot arrangement adds updates, storage planning, and another operating system to maintain. Borrowing a Windows machine adds dependence on someone else. Buying a second device adds money. The point is not that any option is pleasant. The point is to choose the cost while you still have time, rather than paying it during an access failure.

Trade-offs

Keeping Linux as your primary system preserves the environment you chose and avoids turning every publisher decision into a reason to move. It also means accepting that compatibility is conditional. Proton can make a Windows game available, but it cannot protect you from a publisher changing its rules.

Windows as a fallback buys access to titles whose anti-cheat systems are designed around native support. In return, you maintain another operating system, accept its update cycle, and possibly give up the simplicity of one library on one device. A dual-boot setup also makes storage and troubleshooting part of the purchase.

The publisher’s trade-off is visible too. Ubisoft can narrow the supported environment to one it believes it can protect. The cost is Linux and Steam Deck players, including people who were already using the game successfully. That is a business choice with a technical explanation, not a technical fact that removes the cost.

I would weigh the options this way:

  • Keep the Deck for games whose support terms and offline behavior fit your expectations.
  • Add Windows when a specific competitive game is important enough to justify the maintenance.
  • Skip the purchase when the title is only attractive through a platform path the publisher can withdraw.
  • Avoid fragile workarounds when they depend on bypassing protection or violating a service’s rules.

What I would tell a Steam Deck owner

For Honor leaving is not a reason to sell a Steam Deck. The source supports a narrower conclusion: one publisher is withdrawing one game from Linux, and that decision exposes a weakness in compatibility-layer ownership. The broader Linux stack still has active projects, investment, and a large catalog.

I would, however, stop calling a Proton success permanent. Before buying an online competitive game, I would check its anti-cheat support, its dependence on live servers, and the publisher’s history of keeping Linux enabled. If the title matters, I would prepare a Windows fallback before the announced deadline.

The safest way to enjoy Linux gaming is to treat compatibility as a capability, not a guarantee. That sounds less exciting than a perfect compatibility list. It is also the version that survives the next policy change.
